Grant Hill is ready for American Century Championship golf tournament

When it comes to the world of golf, some people land later than others.

Basketball icon Grant Hill falls into this category. Hill found the beautiful game a little over five years ago and has done all that he can to make up for lost time in the process.

Known for his work as a commentator, with Team USA or from dominating on the court himself, Hill is quite the athlete and sometimes that can be hit or miss relative to the links. Height and strength are ideal qualities for basketball or football, but they can be inhibitive to productive golf swings in certain cases. Grant told me about this phenomenon, partly why he was such a fan of Tony Finau when he learned of Finau’s height, in a chat recently where he laid out the state of his game ahead of next month’s American Century Championship.

One of the best parts of the ACC is getting to see celebrities – athletes, entertainers, etc. – in an element that we all know well… trying to do everything we can to succeed on the golf course and maybe struggling a bit in the process. Golf is one of the more humbling things in the world and seeing how people we know thrive in other environments deal with it is what makes the tournament so unique and special. Grant, who is playing in it for the first time, seems ready for that challenge.

Hill and I also discussed his former Duke teammate Bobby Hurley and how he is faring with the Arizona State Sun Devils plus the state of the reigning national champions in the Florida Gators and whether or not Todd Golden’s squad can repeat like the iconic Florida team from 20 years ago as well as the Blue Devils that Grant and Hurley were a part of. It was a fantastic conversation because Grant Hill is a fantastic person.

We will see how fantastic of a golfer he is from July 9th through 13th out at Lake Tahoe!
