Ahead of the Spanish Grand Prix, the focus in the Formula 1 paddock centered on the new Technical Directives aimed at “flexi-wings” and how the stiffer front wings might impact teams such as McLaren.
If the first practice session at the Spanish Grand Prix is any indication, that impact might be minimal at best.
Lando Norris, winner of last week’s Monaco Grand Prix, topped the timing sheets in FP1 with a lap of 1:13.718 on the C3 soft tire, putting him ahead of Red Bull’s Max Verstappen who was in P2, 0.367 seconds behind Norris. The Ferrari duo of Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc finished third and fourth, respectively, while McLaren’s other driver Oscar Piastri rounded out the top five.
The session got off to a scruffy start for one of the two young drivers making an appearance in practice as Ryo Hirakawa, driving in Esteban Ocon’s place at Haas, found the gravel early in FP1. He was able to get moving again, and ultimately finished in P17.
The other young driver participating in FP1, Victor Martins at Williams, finished in P19 on a set of medium tires.
The second practice session starts at 5:00 p.m. local time/11:00 a.m. Eastern time.
