F1 news: Laurent Mekies ‘excited’ to be moving to Red Bull F1

Wednesday marked the dawn of a new era at Red Bull.

The only Team Principal in the Formula 1 team’s history was let go with immediate effect, as Christian Horner was sacked after 20 seasons at the helm. The move comes after weeks of speculation over the future of Max Verstappen with the team, and amidst reports of a “power struggle” within the organization.

Now Red Bull has confirmed that Laurent Mekies, formerly the Racing Director at Ferrari and the Team Principal at Visa Cash App Racing Bulls, Red Bull’s junior team, is taking over for Horner.

“Over the last year and a half it has been an absolute privilege to lead Visa Cash App Racing Bulls and I would like to thank all of our talented people both in Faenza and Milton Keynes,” began Mekies in a statement released by the team.

“Looking to the future, I am excited to be taking on the role of CEO and Team Principal of Oracle Red Bull Racing, one of the most successful and dynamic teams in the sport.

“It’s an honor to be part of this group of brilliant people that embody the Red Bull spirit,” added Mekies. “Together we will achieve great results, buliding on the incredible legacy left by Christian Horner during his two decades in charge.”

Mekies faces a big challenge as he moves to Red Bull. The team currently sits fourth in the Constructors’ Championship standings, 38 points behind third-place Mercedes and a staggering 288 points behind championship leaders McLaren.

There is also the matter of Verstappen’s future with the team. Will Horner’s sacking silence the rumors of a shocking move to Mercedes, or accelerate them?

Not an easy way to start a new job.
