Drones and AI Converge – DRONELIFE

Navigating the Future of Drones and AI with Bo-Hyung Lee at Drone Show Korea 2025

In an opening keynote at Drone Show Korea (DSK) 2025 in Busan, Bo-Hyung Lee, the pioneering First Commander of Drone Operations Command in the Korean Military and now a leading researcher at the Korean Aerospace Research Institute, shared his expert insights on the dynamic convergence of drones and artificial intelligence (AI). His discussion, grounded in a distinguished 35-year military career and now focused on safety frameworks for drone operations, positioned AI not merely as a technological tool, but as a burgeoning force in the evolution of drones.

Lee’s presentation elaborated on the gradual integration of AI in various drone functionalities which are crucial in shifting both military and civilian paradigms. His insights predict a significant transition in the drone landscape post-2025, marked by advanced autonomy and intelligence.

The Technological Evolution of Drones with AI

Lee emphasized several key areas where AI is already transforming drone capabilities:

  1. Enhanced Sensory Operations: AI integration facilitates complex operations such as object detection with high precision and semantic segmentation. This involves detailed analysis and categorization of images down to each pixel, enabling drones to understand and interact with their environments more effectively.

  2. Advanced Decision-Making: Incorporating AI allows drones to predict actions and make informed judgments autonomously. This capability is pivotal, particularly in scenarios requiring rapid response and precision.

  3. Sensor Data Convergence: AI excels in synthesizing information from multimodal sensors, optimizing their functionality by leveraging their strengths and mitigating weaknesses. This is crucial in adapting to varying environmental conditions using AI’s attention mechanisms.

  4. Swarm Intelligence: AI enables autonomous drone formations through distributed algorithms, enhancing real-time information sharing and coordination during missions. This is particularly transformative in military operations, where swarm tactics can significantly amplify the effectiveness of reconnaissance and precision strikes.

Military and Civilian Innovations

In military contexts, the synergy between drones and AI is creating robust systems capable of executing complex missions with enhanced autonomy. Lee discussed how AI-powered drones are utilized for continuous surveillance, achieving target identification with up to 98% accuracy. The strategic deployment of deception drones that can evade radar detection and draw enemy fire is also revolutionizing military engagements by protecting key assets and increasing the efficacy of missions.

For civilian applications, Lee outlined the potential of AI-equipped drones in fields such as agriculture, where they can manage crop health through precise monitoring and treatment application, and in infrastructure, where drones conduct inspections in environments that pose risks to human inspectors. Furthermore, in disaster response scenarios, drones are being tasked with crucial operations such as surveying affected areas, delivering supplies, and even predicting the paths of destructive events like wildfires, thereby optimizing rescue efforts and minimizing damage.

The Future of Human-AI Collaboration

Looking forward, Lee envisions a transformative phase where Human-AI collaboration systems will become mainstream. Advances in brain-computer interface technologies promise a future where human intentions could directly steer drone operations, merging human intuitive and ethical reasoning with drone efficiency in executing repetitive or high-risk tasks.

As Drone Show Korea 2025 progresses, this keynote has set a visionary tone, suggesting that the integration of AI with drone technology is not just enhancing operational capabilities but is also poised to redefine societal norms and capabilities.
