DJI has expanded the capabilities of its Terra 3D modeling software with new reconstruction technologies, including 3D Gaussian Splatting. DJI Terra is designed to create accurate and detailed 2D and 3D models using images captured by drones. It works with both visible light imagery and data collected by DJI LiDAR systems, offering users a complete solution for aerial surveying—from data capture to processing to application.

The software is optimized for use with DJI drones, enabling a seamless workflow that improves both efficiency and accuracy. DJI Terra is widely used in surveying, construction, infrastructure inspection, cultural heritage preservation, and other industries that rely on detailed spatial data.

Introducing 3D Gaussian Splatting: Faster, More Detailed Models

One of the key features of the latest update is the addition of 3D Gaussian Splatting, a technique that builds realistic 3D models from photos at high speed. According to DJI, this feature allows users to “accurately restore diverse scenes such as cultural relics, architectural projects, urban blocks, and scenic gardens.”

Compared to traditional visible-light oblique photogrammetry, 3D Gaussian Splatting improves how fine structures, reflective and transparent surfaces, and vegetation are displayed. This means users get more lifelike and visually complete models. DJI adds that the technology also “can generate distortion-free orthomosaics, further improving the quality of the results.”

Industry-Leading Speed for Large-Scale Projects

Speed is another major advantage of DJI Terra. The software can process about 500 photos per hour, allowing users to complete a single-block modeling process in just 30–40 minutes. For even larger projects, such as city blocks or expansive landscapes with over 10,000 photos, DJI claims the reconstruction speed is “twice that of Terra Mesh,” the company’s previous modeling tool.

This enhanced performance enables professionals to complete projects more quickly, reducing labor and operational costs. “The strong processing capability helps users obtain high-quality 3D data more quickly, significantly shortening project timelines and enabling rapid modeling and application in large-scale scenes,” the company said.

An All-in-One Solution for Surveying and Modeling

DJI Terra offers a unified hardware and software package. Users can fly DJI drones, capture data, and process that data into actionable models all within one ecosystem. This integration reduces complexity and minimizes errors that can come from using tools from different providers.

As industries like construction, public safety, and agriculture continue to adopt drone technology, tools like DJI Terra make it easier to turn aerial images into detailed 3D models and maps. The addition of 3D Gaussian Splatting ensures that DJI stays at the forefront of fast and accurate spatial data reconstruction.
