Cynthia Erivo brought gothic elegance to the red carpet of the 2024 CFDA Fashion Awards in New York City on Monday. The “Wicked” star married a velvet black fabric with exaggerated shoulders and various elements in an ornate gown.
Erivo’s dress was designed by Zac Posen. The look is a custom Gap dress designed in the GapStudio. Posen serves as Gap Inc.‘s creative director, a position he has held since February 2024.
The dramatic gown featured a slim-fitting, mermaid silhouette with a pleated skirt at the base and fitted bodice. The dress included long sleeves with cinched cuffs and a full appearance, juxtaposed with a sharp collar and plunging V-neckline.
Along with the gown, Erivo’s look also featured a hooded element, casting even more theatricality on the Tony Award-winning actress’ ensemble and aura. Erivo accessorized her look with a serpenti-inspired necklace, cuff earrings and septum ring. Her long nails were also decorated for the occasion. Erivo regularly collaborates with stylist Jason Bolden.
Posen’s designs with Gap received the red carpet treatment in the recent past. In May, Anne Hathaway’s look at the Bulgari Party in Rome made waves. The Oscar-winning actress wore an unbuttoned white floor-length custom Gap shirtdress, which was constructed to showcase a sheer corset.
The dress featured asymmetric straps, with one as a cap sleeve on Hathaway’s shoulder and the other off the shoulder. The look came with a high slit, pockets and unbuttoned bodice that revealed a structured corset top with exposed boning. The dress was worn by Julia Fox last August.
The 2024 CFDA Fashion Awards will take place at the American Museum of Natural History in New York on Oct. 28, with Cynthia Erivo hosting. Honorees at this year’s ceremony include Coach, Michael Kors, Annie Leibovitz and finally, Erykah Badu, who will receive the coveted Fashion Icon Award.
