Cozy Layers, Ugg Boots, and Scarves

It may not be fashion week, but the holidays in New York certainly draw quite the well-dressed crowd, so for its street style series They Are Wearing, WWD captured the outfits that residents and tourists alike chose while out and about spreading cheer.

The recent dip in temperatures was a good excuse to show off their best layering skills, as many braved the cold weather by piling on cozy knits, statement coats and fuzzy textures.

The city’s outerwear game continued to be strong and some of the highlights included cropped aviators with droopy shoulders that look like they were plucked from a Lower East Side vintage shop and Uptown chic takes on diva furs. One glamazon seen here resembled a modern Cruella de Vil in a floor-sweeping topcoat in cheetah print with a matching skirt — her heels just over the subway grate.

Overall, though, sneakers are much better suited for hurried commuters and those in a time crunch to get their holiday shopping done. One woman seemed ready to do so in sweatpants and the most comfortable of all footwear: the Ugg boot.

Elsewhere, two ladies offered their own seasonally appropriate takes on the more typically summery boho trend, both wearing maxiskirts — one in sheer chocolate-colored fabric and the other in black leather. The latter had a blanket haphazardly thrown over the shoulder of her blazer like a cape, bringing the cozy vibes of watching Christmas movies on the couch to the office.

Others incorporated woven textiles like preppy cable-knit pullovers or open-weave scarves to add a tactile element to their outfits. One even did so with a bag, toting around a carryall in what looks like Bottega Veneta’s intrecciato weave.
