To celebrate next month’s release of the highly anticipated “Wicked” film, Cambridge Satchel Company has debuted an extensive bag collection that pays homage to Elphaba and Glinda the Good — and there’s one bag from the line you may spot on the big screen. The brand’s signature satchels come right in time for prep school style trends once set by longtime Cambridge Satchel Company fans Taylor Swift and Alexa Chung. Defined by luxurious leather, structured shapes, and utilitarian-style buckle straps, Cambridge Satchel Company’s handbags are poised for a renaissance — and the “Wicked” collection lets you get in on the action with colorful, limited-edition silhouettes.
Cambridge Satchel Company’s resurgence marks yet another 2010s style revival, coming on the heels of Chung’s recent Madewell collection and in lockstep with refreshed prep school style trends on TikTok, where you’ll find Mary Jane shoes styled with knee-high socks, pleated skirts, and satin headbands à la Blair Waldorf. After its founding in 2008, Cambridge Satchel Company quickly elbowed into the fashion lexicon as it expanded colorways, most notably with the neon Flouros Satchels that were (literally) spotlit at London Fashion Week in 2010 — what better way to catch a street style photographer’s attention than with a vivid handbag? Those colorways also made a splash on Instagram feeds in the app’s nascent days, too.
By 2015, the brand had teamed with Vivienne Westwood twice on coveted squiggle-print satchel bags, while trendsetters like Swift, Emma Stone, and Suki Waterhouse were often seen on set and off-duty with a Cambridge Satchel bag by their side. Look closely, and you can see Cambridge Satchel bags make cameos in “Girls,” “Mad Men,” and “Gossip Girl.”
Fittingly, the 1950s-inspired British utilitarian bags were influenced by founder Julie Deane’s love of “Harry Potter” books. The Hogwarts-inspired bags are now setting off to another magical campus this fall — what better school bag for young witches attending Shiz University, a fictional magical arts school modeled off of Cambridge and Oxford.
The Cambridge Satchel Company x Wicked collection plays into the fantastical characters of the cult-favorite musical while remaining true to the brand’s heritage styles. The large collection of handbags, crossbody bags, and stylish accessories come painted in Glinda and Elphaba’s signature bubblegum pink and emerald green colors, alongside opulent textures like sugary glitter, micro-pleated velvet, and metallic finishes. The “frenemies” find common ground in split-color styles like The Micro Bowls Bag and The Little One Bag. Elphaba’s green just so happens to be an ongoing accessories color trend in 2024, while Glinda’s baby pink is a softer take on last summer’s bright Barbie motifs.
There’s a bag for every kind of witch or wizard, be it an on-trend barrel bag, an elegant top-handle Mini Sophie handbag, or a statement Twist Lock Pouch in “Wicked Green” or “Popular Pink.” Ga-linda herself, a.k.a. Ariana Grande, is even seen wearing the Binocular Bag in Popular Pink Celtic with ‘G’ Plate as a crossbody in the official “Wicked” movie trailer, so take notes — she’s the most “popular” girl at “Shiz,” after all.
Also available in the collection are the 11 inch Batchel — an OG silhouette featured in episodes of “Gossip Girl” — and Mini Binocular bags in a special “Shiz Blue” colorway that’ll subtly represent the school in jewel-toned ensembles. Plus, you can shop a wide range of accessories and stationery to stock your new everyday bag (or holiday stockings as gifts for her and him), including “Wicked” themed stickers, leather-bound spell books, and trendy bag charms. Whether you’re a longtime “Wicked” fan, rounding up accessories for an enchanting Halloween costume, or simply looking for a timeless handbag, these perennial designs will carry you well into spring.
The Cambridge Satchel “Wicked” Collection ranges from $60 to $685 and is available to shop now at us.cambridgesatchel.com.
