Burberry Launches Capsule, Holly Green Check Honoring Queen Elizabeth

FIT FOR A QUEEN: Burberry has created a capsule in collaboration with Royal Collection Trust, a charity and department of the Royal Household, to mark the centenary of Queen Elizabeth II’s birth on April 21, 1926.

The collection, which launches Thursday, comes just weeks ahead of “Queen Elizabeth II: Her Life in Style,” the largest exhibition ever of Queen Elizabeth II’s fashion. The show will open April 10 at The King’s Gallery, Buckingham Palace, and run until Oct. 18.

Queen Elizabeth wore Burberry throughout her reign, and awarded the company a Royal Warrant in 1955. Three Burberry designs feature in the upcoming show: a hooded riding cape from around 2010; an original invoice for a Burberry coat ordered in 1966, and a Burberry Check silk scarf from 2013.

The capsule is inspired by the queen’s countryside wardrobe, and includes a belted car coat made at the Burberry factory in Castleford, Yorkshire. The coat is made from lightweight cotton gabardine in holly green and woven with contrasting yarns for an iridescent effect. The main material is certified organic cotton, and it has an organic silk lining.

Burberry has also come up with a new holly green colorway for the Burberry house check, inspired by the Old Stewart Tartan, which the queen liked to wear.

The new check features on the silk lining of the car coat; on a Scottish-woven cashmere scarf, and on the border of a silk twill scarf printed with a hand-painted depiction of Balmoral Castle, the British royal family’s home in the Scottish Highlands.

Burberry has also designed a gold-plated brooch in the shape of a corgi. The dog is wearing an enameled check coat adorned with the Burberry Knight motif on a freshwater pearl.

The pieces will be sold on Burberry.com and selected stores worldwide. It will also be sold through Royal Collection Trust Shops in Edinburgh, London and Windsor and online. The trust cares for the Royal Collection and welcomes visitors to the royal palaces.
