Brock Purdy injury: 49ers QB ‘long shot’ to play in Week 2, could miss more time

It may be Mac Jones season for the San Francisco 49ers.

And that season might last for a few weeks, if not longer.

Brock Purdy suffered both toe and shoulder injuries in the 49ers’ season-opening win over the Seattle Seahawks. After saying on Monday in his conference call with the media that it was a “possibility” the team would need to sign another quarterback, San Francisco head coach Kyle Shanahan noted on Wednesday that it was a “long shot” that Purdy would be able to play in Week 2.

The 49ers take on the New Orleans Saints this weekend.

Shanahan also noted that Purdy’s injuries could be a “multi-week” situation for the team. The quarterback did not practice on Wednesday.

Purdy completed 26-of-35 passes for 277 yards and a pair of touchdowns in San Francisco’s Week 1 win over the Seahawks, with the second of those coming to third-string tight Jake Tonges with under two minutes remaining to give the 49ers a 17-13 lead.

Tonges saw significant playing time in Week 1 because standout tight end George Kittle suffered a hamstring injury, one that landed Kittle on Injured Reserve. As a result, the 49ers tight end will miss at least the next four weeks.

Now, San Francisco fans are left to hope Purdy does not join him on that list.
