Autonomous Drone Delivery Leader Improves Efficiency and Capacity Through Advanced Automation

DroneUp, one of America’s first autonomous drone delivery companies, has announced a new industry benchmark by completing 500 deliveries in a single day. This milestone also includes significant advancements in the pilot-to-drone ratio, enhancing operational efficiency.

DroneUp’s research and development facility at Richard Bland College (RBC) played a crucial role in this achievement. The facility conducted extensive capacity testing, focusing on automating the delivery process using a Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS) waiver. The results include:

  • Increased Deliveries Per Hour: DroneUp set a new record with 40 deliveries per hour, each carrying up to 10 pounds.
  • Improved Pilot-to-Drone Ratio: Automation testing achieved a one-to-many operator-to-drone ratio, reducing delivery costs for partners.
  • Innovative Software: The proprietary Uncrew platform allows global mission management using real-time geodata for precise airspace, terrain, and traffic information. Operators can safely oversee up to 20 missions concurrently through HubOps Mission Requests.

Tom Walker, CEO of DroneUp, expressed enthusiasm about the progress, stating, “We are excited about this achievement but it’s only the beginning of what’s possible. Our work in driving volume while ensuring the reliability and safety of our system is ongoing.”

Future Testing: Increasing Capacity and Delivery Rates

DroneUp aims to further increase delivery capacity and efficiency. John Vernon, CTO of DroneUp, highlighted the next steps: “For DroneUp’s commercial partners, the ultimate goal is to increase the number of deliveries that can be safely completed while diversifying the types of items and packages that drones can effectively manage.” Future tests at RBC will explore drones carrying more than the current 10-pound limit, aiming for larger package sizes and many-to-many drone operations.

Positive Customer Feedback

Over 90% of respondents reported positive experiences, noting safe, timely, and perfect condition deliveries. Additionally, 36% of customers found additional items to purchase, indicating that drone delivery drives incremental sales for retailers.

Building the First Autonomous Ecosystem

DroneUp continues to lead the industry by developing a scalable and economically feasible drone delivery ecosystem. The system integrates automated ground infrastructure, software operating systems, and autonomous drones. As the FAA begins to open airspace for simultaneous drone deliveries, DroneUp is prepared to meet these new opportunities.

Walker emphasized, “At the same time as the FAA begins to open air space for simultaneous drone deliveries, our Ecosystem has been through its own rigors of testing and is ready to meet the moment. Its proven design makes the economics of drone delivery feasible for retailers while providing intuitive accessibility that brings unprecedented convenience to end-users.”
