Anthony Richardson’s pro football career has sadly been a bust to this point. The Indianapolis Colts selected Richardson with the No. 4 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, but after an inconsistent first two seasons, he lost his job to free agent signing Daniel Jones this year. It’s worked out pretty well for the Colts, who improved to 5-1 with a win over the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday.
As Jones led the team to another victory, Richardson spent the game watching from the hospital after suffering a bizarre injury in warmups that is still hard to comprehend.
Richardson fractured his orbital bone while stretching with a rubber leg band, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Head coach Shane Steichen told reporters Richardson spent the game in the hospital as the Colts beat the Cardinals.
The orbital bones surround the eye socket, and it takes a hard, direct blow to face to break it. An NFL QB literally broke his face trying to stretch. Unbelievable.
This is a really scary injury, but it’s wild to think it can happen to someone like Richardson, who just about the biggest/strongest/fastest quarterback in the league. This injury isn’t a laughing matter, but that didn’t stop the internet from getting some jokes off at his expense.
Leg resistance bands can go up to 300+ pounds. That’s a hell of a lot of potential energy coming back at you when it slips off.
We’ll update this story as more information becomes available on Richardson.
