The Tesla Cybertruck has been caught out with all kinds of issues since it launched, like sandy beaches that stuck it in place and water that stopped it in its tracks. YouTuber WhistlinDiesel proved a bit much for the truck when he snapped its frame during a reliability test, and now the channel is back to see just what else the Cybertruck can take.
Last year, YouTube channel WhistlinDiesel, which is led by Cody Detweiler, pitted the Cybertruck against the Ford F-150 to see how the two trucks compared. The testing was savage, and a towing challenge even led to the frame of the Cybertruck snapping in two.
After a five-figure repair bill and a few weeks off the road, Detweiler’s Cybertruck is back in another video and ready to take on more challenges, and it’s just as chaotic as you’d expect.
The test picks up right where the last one left off, with a tug of war to see which truck is the strongest. After pushing and pulling against one another on the drag strip, the challenge is dubbed a tie as it’s just too close to call.
The first issue for the Cybertruck arises when Detweiler attempts to show off the capabilities of Baja mode, which allows the Cybertruck to redistribute its power as the driver sees fit. When he directs all the power to the front wheels, there’s a crunching noise that is later revealed to be the axle shearing away from the wheel hubs. As a result, the wheel won’t spin and Detweiler describes the issue as “another critical flaw in the Cybertruck.”
The team repairs the shredded CV axle and then sets off on a hauling challenge, which loads both the F-150 and Cybertruck up with around 3,000 lbs of cinder blocks. The Ford loses its driveshaft while hauling the load, and the Cybertruck clatters over a jump and loses a rear wheel.
At this point, the truck returns to Tesla for two weeks where it’s patched up and handed back to WhistlinDiesel. The channel claimed that as well as another big repair bill, it was handed a liability waiver from Tesla due to the truck’s poor condition.
With both trucks just about hanging on, they’re then driven through a pond, which brings the Ford to a spluttering halt and it’s left to dry out with the hopes of revival.
The Cybertruck’s tests continue, and it’s given a huge tree trunk to tow across Detweiler’s land, which reveals the true strength of the Cybertruck’s trunk latch. it’s then jumped over some pretty big obstacles, the impact of which forces the EV into a kind of limp mode that limits its speed and leads Detweiler to conclude that they’re having “very real problems.”
It’s at this point that the team admits they can’t get the truck to drive normally once again, and they add that getting Tesla out to repair the vehicle for a third time is unreasonable – as they’ve already spent more than $20,000 on repairs. They then check in on the Ford, which has dried out after its plunge into the lake and starts up once again.
As the Ford starts and isn’t restricted to 5mph, it’s deemed the victor in this race. But honestly, I think the only real winners here are us for getting to sit through another destruction derby pitting the F-150 and Cybertruck against one another once again.
