Aidan Hutchinson’s record contract is worth every penny for the Lions

Hutchinson signed for slightly less overall than Micah Parsons did when he inked his four-year, $186M with the Packers following his trade from Dallas, but while Hutchinson’s deal comes six million short, it makes up with five million more in guaranteed money. It’s a brilliant move for a Lions team that’s already asserted itself as one of the best in the NFC, now the tricky part is staying there.

The 25-year-old pass rusher ranks 7th in the NFL in sacks this season with six, but it’s a case where the devil is in the details. Hutchinson ranks 1st in the NFL in total pressures with 48, and he’s also one of the better run stopping defensive ends in football — where he ranks 27th in total run stops. That includes linebackers and defensive tackles, making his impact on the game far more prolific than the box score shows.

Hutchinson has been the ideal leader for the Lions since being drafted with the No. 2 overall pick in 2022. Operating as an extension of coach Dan Campbell on the field, he brings not only the raw production, but the attitude, and culture setting Detroit were devoid of for so many years. This is a player who also lifted up everyone around him on defense and made them have pride in the Lions, believe they could win, and set the tone.

In many ways this feels like the contract the Bills signed Josh Allen to in 2021. At the time it was a league-defining deal, but quickly became one of the best value contracts in football as the Bills got ahead of the rising salary cap to sign a key player. Now Detroit has done the same, and it’s a brilliant move.
