Saildrone mission highlights growing role of uncrewed systems in maritime security
A Saildrone Voyager unmanned surface vehicle (USV) helped the U.S. Navy track a suspected drug-smuggling vessel that was later intercepted in the Caribbean, leading to the seizure of approximately $81 million worth of cocaine. The operation demonstrates how autonomous maritime systems are moving from experimental platforms to operational tools for real-world security missions.


The interception took place on October 16, 2025, but the Navy and Saildrone released details this week alongside news that the Navy has extended Saildrone’s counter-narcotics mission in the Caribbean and Eastern Pacific.
The operation supported Joint Interagency Task Force South (JIATF-S), which coordinates U.S. efforts against illicit trafficking across the region. According to the Navy, a Saildrone Voyager detected and identified a target designated by JIATF-S, tracked the vessel, and shared information with naval forces. A U.S. Navy ship then intercepted the suspect vessel, resulting in the cocaine seizure.
Long-Endurance Surveillance
Unlike crewed patrol vessels, Saildrone Voyager USVs can remain at sea for months. That endurance allows them to monitor large maritime areas continuously while reducing the need to keep expensive ships on station.
The Navy has operated Saildrone Voyager vessels in the Caribbean and Eastern Pacific since 2023. The fleet supports U.S. Naval Forces Southern Command (NAVSOUTH) and U.S. Fourth Fleet by providing persistent maritime surveillance in areas used by transnational criminal organizations.
Rear Adm. Carlos Sardiello, commander of U.S. Naval Forces Southern Command and U.S. Fourth Fleet, emphasized the operational progress made with autonomous systems.
“This interdiction is the culmination of months of refining our tactics, techniques, and procedures for these advanced systems in the region. The ability to detect a target, have that vessel identified by our team on the watch floor, and then coordinate with assets on scene to complete the interdiction is a testament to the hard work of our Sailors and our commitment to integrating unmanned systems into fleet operations.”
Cmdr. Jon Williams, NAVSOUTH’s Technology and Innovation Director, described the broader value of combining multiple autonomous platforms.
“The success we are seeing with these robotic systems allows us to expand our reach and support our mission requirements more effectively. By layering unmanned surface and airborne systems, we create a highly effective maritime domain awareness network. Operating these systems at scale allows us to accelerate their development and integration across the entire Navy.”
From Demonstration to Daily Operations
For the drone industry, the significance of this announcement extends beyond a single drug seizure.
Autonomous systems often receive attention for demonstrations or technology milestones. This mission shows an operational example where an uncrewed platform became part of the Navy’s routine surveillance network and directly contributed to a successful interdiction.
The Navy has now awarded Saildrone a new $16.3 million task order to continue operating Voyager USVs in support of counter-drug and counter-illicit trafficking missions through 2027.
Saildrone President John Mustin said the extended deployment reflects the value of persistent autonomous operations.

Our unmatched ability to remain on station and on mission in critical regions for months at a time is why our fleet serves as a powerful deterrent to bad actors. We look forward to continuing to partner with the Navy in its mission to secure the country’s maritime approaches and southern border.”
A Growing Pattern for Autonomous Systems
The mission also reflects a broader shift across defense and homeland security. Rather than replacing crewed ships, autonomous vessels are taking on long-duration surveillance tasks while sailors remain available for missions that require human judgment and direct action.
That approach allows military and law enforcement agencies to cover larger areas with fewer personnel. It also provides commanders with continuous intelligence that can improve the speed and effectiveness of interdiction operations.
For the maritime autonomy industry, the successful interception offers another example that uncrewed systems are becoming operational assets rather than experimental technologies. The $81 million cocaine seizure illustrates how persistent autonomous surveillance can produce measurable results in missions that demand constant awareness across vast ocean areas.
