The Nike Air Rift, which was first introduced in spring 1996, marked Nike’s first tabi shoe and the start of the company’s efforts to facilitate natural motion with its . Partially based on input from Kenyan long-distance runners, the split toe and the shoe’s moniker are inspired by Kenya’s Great Rift Valley. In addition to Flo Milli, who paired her white version of the Nike Air Rift with chunky white socks and a basketball look including mini shorts and a ruched jersey, we recently saw New York City’s first lady Rama Duwaji wear a black pair with double straps at the Knicks championship parade last week. Not to mention, Kim Kardashian’s collaboration with Nike has included the NikeSkims Rift in mesh and satin versions which dropped this year.
“There’s something so powerful and beautiful about a ballet flat, which is why reimagining the Nike Rift for the first NikeSkims sneaker felt perfect,” Kim Kardashian said in a press release for the first NikeSkims footwear drop. “The Rift isn’t just a shoe — it’s a ’90s icon that women everywhere have fallen in love with. Together with Nike, we focused on creating a version that feels minimalist, sleek and flattering.”
The Nike Air Rift fits in with the ballet-inspired footwear trend that’s made waves in recent years, with Nike even dropped a Ballerina version of the Rift with ribbon ankle straps in 2025. While split-toe shoes can be divisive, the Rift could end up being one of summer 2026’s buzzy footwear styles.
