Chanel Unveils New Boutique in Palo Alto, Calif.

Chanel will open its first stand-alone boutique in Palo Alto, Calif., on Friday.

The French luxury fashion house will unveil its newest freestanding boutique at Stanford Shopping Center, Northern California‘s premier open-air shopping destination. Designed by New York-based architect and longtime Chanel collaborator Peter Marino, the boutique reflects the house’s latest architectural vision.

Rebekah McCabe, general manager of fashion for Chanel in the U.S., said, “We’re so excited. It’s such an exciting time to be in this market. As you know, Palo Alto is right in the heart of Silicon Valley. It’s a place that’s really shaped by innovation, creativity and entrepreneurial mindsets, and so to create a full seamless experience and expression for the brand there feels like the right time.”

The Palo Alto boutique will feature “the full assortment and a curated experience” where Chanel can service both new and existing clients. “It’s an extension of our Bay Area location, so it really enables the whole Bay Area to have a complete Chanel experience,” said McCabe.

Previously the Chanel customer would shop the brand in Neiman Marcus at the Stanford Shopping Center or would travel to San Francisco for the freestanding Chanel boutique, the latter of which remains an option.

“What I think is exciting about what our offering will be here, is now we’ll be able to show her the full complete Chanel universe — the fashion, watches, fine jewelry and fragrance and beauty. We want to help her build a wardrobe for many occasions,” she said.

“By being able to show the full breadth of the Chanel offering, I think that enables her to have that ability from ready-to-wear through Matthieu Blazy’s incredible MDA collection (Métiers d’Art 2026 collection), which is what we will launch with. We’ll have an abundance of handbags to choose from and a mix of our novelty and iconic designs. We have a great shoe assortment — runaround flats, engaging heels, runway and sneakers,” she said. She also cited all the accessories, silk scarves, belts and costume jewelry.

McCabe said a lot of thought goes into where Chanel chooses to open stores. “There was a lot of demand and excitement from that community [Palo Alto], while also studying client behavioral trends. We saw a lot of people are obviously living in Palo Alto,” and not everyone commutes to San Francisco.

“We always like to service our clients in the shopping formats that they enjoy, and giving them both options [San Franciso and Palo Alto freestanding boutiques] feels like the best that Chanel could provide.”

Asked what she anticipates will be bestsellers, she said, “I do think there’s huge potential with ready-to-wear. Those who are local to Palo Alto haven’t seen the full collection. So to give them the depth and breadth of the full collection in a freestanding boutique is really when the story can come to life.”

McCabe said clientelling and in-store experiences will play significant roles in the new boutique.

“I think that’s critical to all of our boutique activity. We want to engage with our clients, we want to enjoy our loyal clients, but also recruit our new clients. We want to engage through arts and culture, through storytelling about our collection, through events and partnerships. We really look to be part of the community that we create stores in,” said McCabe.

Discussing the importance of exclusivity to the boutique, McCabe said, “We really believe in one boutique, one story. We build the assortment based on each individual boutique in each individual market, so that we continue to surprise our client in every boutique that they enter, so this will be no different. We hope to create an assortment that feels new and fresh and different, even if you also travel, like all of our clients do.”

McCabe added that California is a very important market to Chanel, “and one of our top markets in the U.S.”

When asked what she’s seeing from luxury shoppers right now in terms their spending behavior and expectations, McCabe said, “We continue to see incredible excitement from all the creativity and joy that Matthieu Blazy is bringing to Chanel. We see tremendous appetite and excitement for ready-to-wear, handbags, shoes, costume jewelry. I think there’s a real joy in the feel of fashion right now,” she said.

McCabe said that Marino has created a “beautiful design that is unique to Palo Alto, but also feels very much that you’re in the House of Chanel. He does a beautiful job of reflecting his environment.”

Spanning over 5,100 square feet, the Palo Alto boutique marks Chanel’s 25th stand-alone fashion boutique in the U.S. There are also three seasonal/ephemeral boutiques in Aspen; Montecito, Calif., and East Hampton, N.Y.

In California alone, there are four stand-alone Chanel boutiques (Beverly Hills, Costa Mesa, San Francisco and now, Palo Alto), excluding the Montecito one.

At the Stanford Shopping Center, Chanel took over the space in April 2025 that was formerly occupied by Burberry, and its new neighbors are Cartier, Hermès and Rolex.

The one-level Chanel boutique re-imagines the spirit of Gabrielle Chanel’s legendary apartment at 31 rue Cambon in Paris through a contemporary lens. The house’s defining codes are integrated throughout the space, with a signature palette of white, black and gold accented with vibrant pops of color. Balancing open areas with more intimate settings, the boutique conjures up a Parisian home.

Positioned prominently within the shopping center, the boutique is defined by a double-height facade swathed in white pleated marble and black metal detailing. Gold fine jewelry window displays add a glow to the exterior.

Inside are eight individual salons. Bespoke, hand-tufted rugs and textured upholstery fabrics designed by Marino are featured throughout the store. Upon entry, clients are welcomed by three adjoining salons devoted to leather goods and accessories. Fragrance and beauty and watches and fine jewelry salons complement these areas.

At the heart of the boutique is a dedicated shoe salon, enhanced by four Black Belt Collection Parallelo light fixtures designed by Marino and a pair of Squeezed Half Tube bronze chairs by Voukenas Petrides. Beyond this space, clients are guided into two distinct ready-to-wear salons.

The first salon features a marble coffee table with a white concrete top by Paul Kingma, accompanied by a sculptural solid red oak chair by Aaron Poritz and Marino’s gold leather Stix lamp. The second salon is furnished with custom pieces, creating an intimate and exclusive setting.

Adjacent fitting rooms are lit by a Montano Patch lamp alongside a pair of the architect’s own black Klien Oxycut lamps with custom shades.

There’s also a care and repair salon that embodies Chanel & Moi, the house’s commitment to preserving Chanel creations over time. Care and repair salons will be added to select Chanel boutiques in the U.S., said McCabe.

In tribute to Coco Chanel’s legacy as a patron of the arts, a collection of artworks is on display, reinforcing the dialogue between fashion, architecture and art.

In the entry hall, clients are greeted by a laser-cut engraving in granite by German artist Gregor Hildebrandt that depicts Coco Chanel. The care and repair area features a piece by Japanese-American painter Kimiko Fujimura. The fitting rooms are enhanced with works by Mark Francis, Chris Succo and Donald Sultan.

The boutique will open with the Chanel Metiers d’Art 2026 collection. First presented in an abandoned subway station in New York City, Blazy’s inaugural Metiers d’Art collection celebrates a dynamic range of characters and identities through relaxed essentials, refined contemporary silhouettes, and bold textures.

There is a dedicated watches and fine jewelry salon. The fine jewelry collections is based around the codes that have shaped Gabrielle Chanel’s creative universe, from the quilted motif of Coco Crush to the iconic No. 5 and the timeless Camélia and Comète. The house’s watch collections — J12, Première and Boy-Friend — embody Chanel’s creation-first approach to watchmaking.
