The Durutti Column, the cult Manchester band who returned the moment they arrived, have, in fact, returned. Following the January reissue of their beloved debut, Return of the Durutti Column, Vini Reilly’s trio has lined up a new album, Renascent, for release on July 31 via London Records. Check out a single called “Liars” below, along with album art designed by two original illustrators for the band’s old label Factory: Mark Holt and Hamish Muir of 8vo.
Backed by longtime percussionist Bruce Mitchell and player-producer Keir Stewart, Reilly came back to the studio at a time of snowballing recognition for his Durutti Column work, including endorsements from Frank Ocean, Yung Lean, and Harry Styles. (Of the latter nod, Reilly said, “I don’t know who Harry Styles is, but I shall Google him.”) Guests on the new LP include Caoilfhionn Rose, one of the artists signed up for a Durutti Column tribute at the Styles-curated Meltdown Festival in London next month.
The Durutti Column’s last album of original material was 2010’s A Paean to Wilson. Read Brad Shoup’s review of The Return of the Durutti Column (Expanded & Remastered).
