From the pale pink jeans championed by Agolde, AG, and Frame this spring to the bold pop of red denim on Isabel Marant’s Fall/Winter 2026–2027 runway, colorful denim is emerging as a trend worth watching.
Looking even further ahead, CottonWorks by Cotton Incorporated spotlights what’s next in its 2028 color report for the denim category.
“Color evolves with intention focusing on shades that support denim’s inherent nature. The season’s palette reflects a move toward grounded, emotionally resonant tones that feel authentic and enduring,” CottonWorks states.
From classic blues and neutrals to untraditional seasonal hues, the palette is rooted in confidence, wearability and modern longevity.
The forecast reaffirms blue’s role as the foundation of the denim palette, highlighting how global, cultural, and artistic shifts continue to shape its evolving shades.
“A tried-and-true deep midnight serves as a heritage luxury anchor, standing out as a timeless testament to quality. Aged tonalities bring in silver-tinged blue that speaks to the hallmark of time with a grey undertone and subdued atmospheric quality Clean, mid-tone sky blue is crisp with a subtle coolness that keeps it modern and airy,” the report states.
The report also considers which shades best complement the drapey, lightweight fabrications gaining traction in the market. For these lighter applications, CottonWorks recommends aquatic blues that enhance the fabrics’ airy, fluid movement.
The neutral category spans earthen shades of chocolate brown, stone gray and taupe. The colors provide a “reliable sense of adaptability” and “foundation of quiet functionality,” CottonWorks states.
Sandy birch suits relaxed silhouettes and grounds bolder colors. Meanwhile, jet black and reddened brown add intensity to the neutral palette, particularly when applied to dark bases with wash-downs.
Denim gets mysterious with reds. “The spectrum serves as a moody and elevated palette that feels entirely unique to the denim market,” CottonWorks states. Classic shades such as oxblood and rust provide an intensity that doesn’t overpower when used in head-to-toe looks, while statured reds add energy. What the colors have in common is richness.

Green has been a dominate color in denim mills’ collections for several seasons and it continues to be a force. The report highlights how a green palette “focuses on everyday wearability, balancing elegance with utilitarian roots.”
Though familiar, the colors are dynamic. A touch of emerald gives teal a glowing effect. Olive moves away from military origins to more refined looks. Industrial-inspired silver-sage and khakied greens that offer a sturdy, reliable option for twills and canvases, CottonWorks notes.
Mint—a color every millennial remembers dominating denim in the early 2010s—makes a fresh comeback. CottonWorks said the hue is a departure from standard fall colors and stands out for “its dueling identity being intense when used as a stand-alone color or soft and muted depending on its base and application.”
Shades of purple and pink are also bubbling up. Described as “ethereal neutrals,” CottonWorks said the colors are being adopted for “denim foundations” instead of decorative and novel accents.

Mauve emerges as a classic for both men’s and women’s denim. The dusty hue gives jeans a desert-inspired, mineral undertone. This organic, sunbaked quality is echoed in terracotta blush, providing sophisticated depth, CottonWorks said.
Still, the colors spark creativity. The report names lilac as a versatile color that can be played up for a punchy, trend-forward look or washed down for a vintage aesthetic. Meanwhile, the shades of soft pink that are currently trending in the market are growing brighter and more saturated—ideal for strong, feminine denim silhouettes.
Yellow is maturing as well. The hue is deepening into richer, more golden tones, a shift away from the airy butter yellow that still brightens contemporary collections. CottonWorks said the shift points toward yellows with “reassuring radiance.” While vintage ochre brings retro-inspired warmth to head-to-toe styling and specialized wash effects, mustard provides a grounding and versatile option everyday fashion.
