Talking to Dylan Brady About Real Shit (Like Tubas)

Are you getting your wife on the record?

We’ll make songs every now and then. She’s going into film now, so I’m cooking up some music for some of her projects, which has been fun.

Sweet. How do you feel like marriage has changed you?

It’s another level of committing to each other, which is really awesome. I didn’t think it would feel that different, but I feel like it actually really does feel different in a beautiful, awesome way. Not that I didn’t feel supported before, but it’s just like another level of that.

How did you guys meet?

We went to high school together, but we reconnected after. She was there pre-[Gecs], pre-everything.

When was the last time you saw Laura?

She came to L.A. maybe two months ago.

And you’ve been working over the computer when she’s not here?

Yep.

Is there any music you guys have that you made that you want to talk about?

I think everything’s pretty early, but we’re having a good time.

What about, like, sounds that you wanna explore together that you haven’t already?

Mmm. Sounds… Maybe a tuba. It’s a great instrument.

Do you have a favorite sound of all time?

The human voice is easily the best instrument of all time. It’s incredibly expressive and cuts across all kinds of barriers. Not to state the obvious, but it’s the most human kind of sound. The second best, maybe kick drum.

What’s your ideal kick drum?

I think there’s all kinds of great kick drums. Depends on the song or the genre, but Steely Dan has great kicks. Skrillex has great kicks. Beck has great kicks.

Is there anybody else you really wanna work with?

Justin Bieber.

Have you hit him up?

I have hit him up, actually.

Oh, what did he say?

He didn’t say anything.

Generally, do you have any thoughts about DIY computer music or hyperpop, do you think the underground is in a good place? Are you enjoying a lot of stuff coming out?

I think it’s good. There’s a lot of boundaries being pushed, a lot of people expressing new ideas. Seems healthy.

Going forward, do you wanna lean more into solo auteur Dylan Brady, or do you still want to be Geccing forever?

I’m definitely gonna be Geccing forever.
