Fragment founder Hiroshi Fujiwara has steadily been teasing collaborations on both models from Nike’s Mind series and the newest iteration of Air Max over the course of this year. Little did anyone know, however, that all the shoes would release within a relatively tight window.
The Fragment x Nike Mind 001, Mind 002 and Air Liquid Max will all release over the course of roughly a fortnight beginning this weekend. The Mind 002 sneaker, which gets the most radical transformation within the capsule, will receive two colorways in black and gray. The Mind 001 mule and Air Liquid Max, meanwhile, will each get a single black treatment.
“I’ve always been interested in new technology and innovation, and when I had the opportunity to quietly preview several new Nike sneakers and hear about their concepts directly, Liquid Max and the Mind series immediately stood out,” Fujiwara said in a press release. “When I first started working with Nike in the late ’90s, I learned how the brand was constantly creating new sneakers for athletes using the latest technology. Both Liquid Max and Nike Mind feel very much like ‘true Nike’ products in that sense.”
While keeping the sole unit’s build unchanged with its calm- and focus-inducing pressure point nodules, the Mind 002 features a redesigned upper that’s less sleek and more punk. New materials that appear to be knit feature several different textures and meet with dramatic stitching. The lacing system is also redone and spread out with just three eyelets on each side while adding a toggle. Familiar Fragment motifs then come via product text on the lateral midsole and the brand’s signature shade of blue applied to the nodes of both the gray and black editions.
The blue pods and product text carry over to the black Mind 001, which doesn’t mess with the baseline construction but adds a Fragment lightning bolt logo above the forefoot.
Fragment’s Air Liquid Max, finally, gets a fully blacked-out look including a translucent black outsole. White text hits come on both the midsole and beneath the lateral collar. Its release will come just days after the launch for the model, which employs a new Air Max system featuring point-loaded Air pods leaving as much negative space as possible.
The Fragment x Nike Mind 001 and Mind 002 will release Saturday through Fragment’s website before a wider release March 19 via the Snkrs app and select third-party retailers. The Fragment x Nike Air Liquid Match will then drop March 31 and April 3 with the same progression of channels. Pricing for the Air Liquid Max is set at $225, while the other models have yet to be confirmed.
