Inside The Miu Miu Tales #31 Premiere With Mona Fastvold

For director Mona Fastvold, “Discipline” started with a Miu Miu dress. A specific dress: the pleated shirtdress she wore for the press conference of “The Testament of Ann Lee” at the Venice Film Festival.

“ I wore it as a form of sort of protection or armor in a situation where I felt really vulnerable, because you’re showing your film for the first time,” Fastvold said. “I chose this piece feeling really protected and comforted in it. And then when I took it off was when I said ‘I’m gonna make a piece about this piece of clothing that I have a strong emotional relationship to.’”

The dress has a starring role in her short film for Miu Miu Women’s Tales, the brand’s female-centric film series. The short reunited Fastvold with many of her “The Testament of Ann Lee” collaborators, including star Amanda Seyfried and choreographer Celia Rowlson Hall. Many were on hand for the premiere of “Discipline” at the Village East by Angelika on Thursday night, alongside Miu Miu Tales alums like Hailey Gates — who moderated a post-screening Q&A — and Chloë Sevigny.

“No spoilers,” said one guest as they settled into a seat near the film’s producer, box of Miu Miu-branded popcorn in hand. The theater was filled with friends of the brand including Lola Tung, Lili Reinhart, Diana Silvers, Maude Apatow, Ella Hunt, Sarah Pidgeon, Louisa Jacobson, Alexa Chung, Myha’la, Benito Skinner and Grace Gummer. Fastvold’s family, including husband Brady Corbet, were also in attendance.

“Discipline” was filmed over two days just outside of New York last fall, during a stretch of intense promotion leading up to the release of “Ann Lee.”

“ I knew how it was gonna end, so I kind of just got to just enjoy the journey,” Seyfried said after the screening, as the crowd trickled out of the theater and headed to the after party at Chez Margaux across town. Like the rest of the crowd, she was seeing the film — specifically, the beginning — for the first time. “That was all shot when I wasn’t there, so I just got to fly in and wear a pretty dress and swim through a group of incredibly talented dancers with their puppets.”

The film is populated by faceless Miu Miu-wearing puppets, who are controlled by a team of dancers. A final sequence speaks to the choreography in “Ann Lee,” and Seyfried described “Discipline” as an extension of their biopic about the founder of the Shaker movement.

“It’s people breaking the mold. It’s how things begin,” added Seyfried. “How people create.”
