Ralph Lauren to Create Team USA Ice Installation at Rockefeller Center

The next Ralph Lauren Olympics promotion will be cool — really cool.

With just one week to go before the start of the Milano Cortina Olympics, Ralph Lauren is unveiling a 12-foot ice installation in the Channel Gardens of Rockefeller Center featuring three Team USA athletes who will be competing in the games: figure skater Madison Chock, snowboarder Red Gerard and Para snowboarder Brenna Huckaby.

The sculpture is being carved from 10 metric tons of ice and will depict the athletes wearing Ralph Lauren’s Team USA opening and closing ceremony parade uniforms. Five master ice carvers and World Ice Art Champions have been tasked with creating the installation. It was carved over five days in a studio in Syracuse, N.Y., and transported to Manhattan, where the temperature is not expected to go above freezing for at least the next nine days, ensuring it’s not in danger of melting.

The installation will be revealed on Friday and will remain through Saturday.

This marks the first time an ice installation of this magnitude has been showcased at Rockefeller Center. It’s also a first for the Ralph Lauren brand.

In addition to the Channel Gardens work, another sculpture of Team USA speed skater Erin Jackson will be installed at Top of the Rock, where fans can take photos with the Olympic gold medalist’s likeness against the skyline of New York. Top of the Rock is a popular observation deck at the top of the iconic 30 Rockefeller Plaza building.

Ralph Lauren has been the official outfitter of the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic teams for nearly 20 years. Its relationship began in Beijing in 2008.
