The Seattle Seahawks are headed back to the Super Bowl and get a chance for some delayed revenge against the New England Patriots. The Seahawks beat the Los Angeles Rams XX-XX in an entertaining shootout in the NFC Championship to secure the NFC’s spot in Super Bowl 60.
The teams went back and forth in the first half, but Seattle looked like they might take control in the middle of the game. Late in the second quarter, they drove 74 yards in 34 seconds to take a 17-13 lead when Sam Darnold found Jaxon Smith-Njigba alone in the end zone. They then recovered a muffed point early in the third quarter and Darnold found Jake Bobo to give Seattle an 11-point lead.
While LA would not go away, they couldn’t get over the hump against Seattle. Twice they responded to the Seahawks scoring and then finally got a much-needed stop at 12:24 in the fourth quarter. They then drove 84 yards but turned it over on downs when they could not convert 4th and 4 at the Seahawks 6. That was the last time the Rams saw the ball and the Seahawks are headed to Santa Clara, California in two weeks.
Seahawks Super Bowl history
When was the last Super Bowl appearance for Seattle?
The Seahawks are competing for a Lombardi Trophy for the first time since 2015. They closed out the 2014 season facing the Patriots in Super Bowl 49. Seattle was a favorite for the first time in their Super Bowl history and they came up short in a 28-24 loss.
This was one of the more entertaining Super Bowls in recent memory. It was a back-and-forth game in the first half. After nobody scored in the first quarter, the teams exchanged two touchdowns in the second quarter. Seattle took a ten point lead in the third quarter and looked like they might secure their second straight Super Bowl win.
However, New England stormed back in the back half of the final frame. Tom Brady found Julian Edelman with 2:02 remaining to take a 28-24 lead. Russell Wilson drove the Seahawks down the field and had a 2nd and goal at the Patriots 1-yard line with 26 seconds left. Notoriously, the Seahawks elected to pass instead of run and Malcolm Butler picked off the pass to win it for the Patriots.
How many times have the Seahawks appeared in the Super Bowl?
This year marks Seattle’s fourth trip to the Super Bowl. They were on the verge of a repeat in 2015 before Butler picked off Wilson. The year prior, the Seahawks crushed Peyton Manning and the Broncos. Seattle’s defense opened with a safety to open a 36-point run through the first three quarters en route to a 43-8 victory. The Seahawks lost their first Super Bowl appearance in 2006, losing 21-10 to the Steelers in Super Bowl 40.
Seattle heads into Super Bowl 60 with a 1-2 Super Bowl record in three appearances.
