Richard S. Madris, a longtime apparel executive and partner at Winlit whose career helped shape the modern American outerwear business, died Dec. 25 at age 81.
Madris spent decades in the New York garment industry. Starting in 1969, he began a long-running partnership with David Winn at Winlit Group, Ltd., helping to build the company into a leading player in leather and outerwear. Under their direction, Winlit became a key supplier to American brands including Tommy Hilfiger, Guess, Ellen Tracy and BCBG, while also developing proprietary labels Renaissance, LNR and NY 10018. The 36-year partnership culminated in the 2005 acquisition of Winlit by G-III Apparel Group.
Madris was described in a statement by his family as “respected by peers and competitors alike for his integrity, his sharp business acumen, and his deep knowledge of global sourcing.”
Born on Aug. 19, 1944, Madris graduated from Bradley University in 1967 before entering the New York apparel trade. His career was notable for its longevity and dedication, particularly his long partnership with Winn, which spanned nearly four decades
For all of his professional accomplishments, Richard’s greatest pride was his family. He was the husband of the late Susan Madris (née Honig), with whom he shared a life rooted in New York City, Armonk and Tarrytown. After her death in 2020, he found his joy in his children and grandchildren, the family’s statement said.
He is survived by his son, Jared Madris, and his wife Rachel of Croton-on-Hudson; his daughter, Emily Madris, and her husband David of Jersey City, and his three granddaughters, Madison, Taylor and Regan.
“Richard will be remembered not only for the jackets that bore the labels he helped build, but for the warmth of his character, his loyalty to his friends, and the quiet strength he provided his family,” the statement added.
