The Running Shoes That Shaped its Legacy

The New York City Marathon debuted on Sept. 13, 1970, with 127 participants and 55 finishers. Fast forward 55 years, and the event has grown into the world’s largest and most anticipated road race, drawing professionals and novices alike to push their limits — and test running shoe innovations along the way.

Footwear News has documented these innovations for decades, highlighting key moments in the running shoe category.

When the marathon was nearing its 10th anniversary, FN explored the rise and impact of running shoes in an article titled “Where Were You Ten Years Ago,” featuring commentary and quotes from athletes and industry insiders. The conversation spotlighted early adopters like Adidas and Brooks as well as Phil Knight of Nike, with FN editors noting, “Nike wasn’t even a flicker in Knights eye.” Nike was founded in 1972, two years after the race debuted.

The article also quoted Bob Anderson, then president of World Publications, publishers of Runner’s World who stated, “In 1970, I was the wildest dreamer we had … I honestly never guessed that running would become the “in” thing to do.” Anderson’s dream has undoubtedly surpassed expectations.

Today, the marathon — including iconic brands like New Balance, the 2025 sponsor and the NYC Marathon’s longest-standing partner — has cemented its legacy. As Footwear News celebrates 80 years, we’re also marking the marathons 55th anniversary as the world’s most anticipated and largest road race— with running shoes at the center of it all.
