New Balance has launched a new program aimed at accommodating consumers with disabilities, limb loss or foot size discrepancies.
Dubbed the “mismatch sizing program,” the initiative centers around the brand’s Made in USA Fresh Foam 1540v4 sneaker and allows consumers to purchase two different shoe sizes for the right and left foot or just one single shoe.
Craig Heisner, senior director for wellness and verticals at New Balance, told FN in an interview that the company chose this specific sneaker to launch this program due to being one of New Balance’s “most supportive and premium models.”
The 1540v4, which also holds the Seal of Acceptance from the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA), features a Fresh Foam cushioned midsole, breathable mesh upper, dual insert system to accommodate various foot shapes, and Rollbar stability technology to control rear-foot movement.
“By launching the mismatch sizing program with this model, we’re making an already great shoe even more accessible and inclusive to ensure everyone can enjoy a tailored, comfortable fit,” Heisner said.

And launching a complex program like this is no small feat. The executive noted that the mismatch sizing program required New Balance to rethink traditional footwear production and distribution.
“Offering customers the ability to purchase two different shoe sizes – or even just a single shoe – meant adjusting our inventory, logistics and ordering systems to accommodate a much broader range of combinations,” Heisner noted. “No matter the challenges, we believe these efforts are more than worthwhile, especially for the support we can provide individuals with disabilities, limb loss or foot size discrepancies.”
As for how the program is catching on with consumers since it launched, Heisner said that feedback has been “incredibly positive and affirming.”
“Many people have shared how meaningful it is to finally have the option to mix and match sizes or purchase just a single shoe,” the footwear executive said. “We’ve heard from customers who say this small change has had a big impact on their comfort and mobility. By offering a solution that truly meets people where they are, we’re proud to see our commitment to inclusivity and personalized comfort resonate so strongly.”
And don’t be surprised if more styles are added to the program in the future.
“We are always looking for ways to further our commitment to inclusivity and personalized fit,” Heisner added. “The success and positive response to the mismatch sizing program for the 1540v4 has encouraged us to explore expanding the offering to additional styles in the future. Our goal is to ensure that even more people can experience footwear that’s made to fit their unique needs.”
