Jim Furyk to captain Team USA, Skechers World Champions Cup

There is more team golf on the way this year, folks.

On Wednesday the captains and players were announced for December’s Skechers World Champions Cup supporting Shriners Children’s and the great Jim Furyk will be the man leading the United States.

Part of what makes this event, set to take place at Feather Sound Country Club in Florida, unique is that there are actually three teams. Furyk’s Americans will take on Team Europe led by Darren Clarke and Team International led by Mike Weir. Overall the event is comprised of PGA Tour Champions players who have histories of major championships and participation on both Ryder Cups and Presidents Cups.

There are four players listed for each squad as their respective captains will also join them. Beyond that there will be a sixth and final spot for each group that will be determined based on the Charles Schwab Cup standings at the end of the regular season which is actually following this week’s SAS Championship.

As noted the event will take place in early December. It will be be nine-hole matches that involve team formats and single play with a point system that is quite unique. Jim Furyk was kind enough to join me for a chat about it all and discussed his excitement along with several other things.

The proceeds from his event will support Tampa-based Shriners Children’s which is great to see. Tickets start at $50 and can be found at WorldChampionsCup.com. From a television standpoint it can be seen on ESPN and ABC.

Our thanks to Captain Jim Furyk for the time.
