It was February of 2004. We were minding our own business, nervously awaiting Valentine’s Day, and then, boom, baseball was ruined. Alex Rodriguez joined the already star-studded Yankees (Derek Jeter, Mariano Rivera, Gary Sheffield), and New York dominance was predicted for…ever.
Why’d Rodriguez do it? Wasn’t he happy starring on the last place Texas Rangers year after year after year? …Oka,y fine, that might’ve sucked, but didn’t he have other options?
Well, what it came down to was simply, the Yankees were the richest team and thus the only team that could afford him and his most lucrative contract in all of sports..
And we all thought that America’s pastime had become simply watching rich people win. Hooray.
Good thing predicting the future is hard. Unless you’re a Yankee fan, in which case, sorry, this whole post hasn’t really been talking to you.)
One thing that’s not hard to discern: A-Rod leaving the Texas Rangers for the New York Yankees was a big deal.
