Aldrich Potgieter made PGA Tour history for South Africa

It took a bit of overtime, but Aldrich Potgieter got it done in Detroit.

The South African earned hsi first PGA Tour title in just his 20th start and before the age of 21 at that. It was monumentous for Potgieter as he outlasted Max Greyserman and Chris Kirk in the playoff.

It was Greyserman who pushed Potgieter the most as they both made par on their first three holes and matched each other’s birdie on the fourth. Aldrich made birdie on the fifth and that was that.

Notably, Aldrich Potgieter is the 9th-youngest winner on the PGA Tour since 1983. Last season featured two instances of a player under 21 picking up wins and they both happened to belong to Nick Dunlap.

While Aldrich is young for PGA Tour standards overall he is particularly young relative to South African standards. By earning his win at his current age Aldrich became the youngest winner on Tour ever from South Africa. Previously Garrick Higgo held that mark with a win at the age of 22 back during the 2021 season.

It was a big-time win for someone so green in terms of career experience. It stands to reason that it’ll be the first of at least a few as well.
