UConn grad part of latest wave of WNBA roster cuts

Another round of WNBA training camp cuts just came through as teams prepare to play preseason games on Tuesday and Wednesday. Among the most notable was Paige Bueckers’s former teammate Christyn Williams, who graduated from UConn in 2022 and was drafted No. 14 overall to the Washington Mystics that year.

Unfortunately, Williams suffered an ACL tear in training camp, similar to what happened to Georgia Amoore a week ago. She rehabbed for a year but was eventually cut from the Mystics, eventually signing a rest-of-season contract with the Phoenix Mercury at the end of the 2023 season. The Mercury waived her in training camp at the beginning of the 2024 season. This year, Williams was signed to a training camp contract with the Minnesota Lynx, but was waived before the Lynx’s preseason games.

The Minnesota Lynx also waived Kiara Leslie. Elsewhere around the league, the Dallas Wings announced they had waived Aaronette Vonleh, their 31st pick in the 2025 WNBA draft. Tuesday afternoon, the Seattle Storm announced they had cut both Jordan Hobbs and Madison Conner. The Storm drafted Conner 29th overall and Hobbs 34th overall in the 2025 WNBA Draft. Seattle’s only remaining 2025 draftees in training camp are Serena Sundell (No. 26) and Dominique Malonga (No. 2).

Training camp cuts will ramp up in the coming days as teams continue to play their first and second preseason games. The deadline to lock in opening day rosters is May 15, but many teams will do their final round of cuts a day or two before that, so that players have a chance to be claimed off waivers before the season starts.

Players can be claimed off waivers in the 48 hours after they are waived, and they get paid for that period. If teams wait too long, that period enters the regular season, and the money being paid to them goes against their cap limit. It’s also more expensive since in-season pay rates are higher than training camp.

The league already saw one player be claimed off waivers when the Atlanta Dream grabbed Shyanne Sellers from the Golden State Valkyries.

Here is an updated list of every player waived from training camps so far:
