Amprius Launches 450 Wh/kg SiCore Battery for UAVs

Silicon anode cell delivers extended endurance and payload capacity, with mass production planned through global manufacturing network

Amprius’ High-Density SiCore Battery Moves Toward Commercial Deployment

Amprius Technologies, Inc. (NYSE: AMPX) has announced the commercial launch of its 450 Wh/kg SiCore™ lithium-ion battery, the company’s most energy-dense cell to date. Built on Amprius’ proprietary silicon anode platform, the new SiCore cell delivers up to 950 Wh/L and is now being evaluated for qualification by aviation and defense customers.

The battery is designed for mission-critical applications requiring maximum endurance and minimal weight, such as High-Altitude Platform Stations (HAPS), Medium-Altitude Platform Stations (MAPS), and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). With up to 80% more energy than traditional lithium-ion cells using graphite anodes, the SiCore cell provides longer flight times, increased range, and enhanced payload capacity—all within a compact, production-ready format.

Scalable Design Meets Industry Needs

“We’ve demonstrated what’s possible at 450 Wh/kg with our SiMaxx platform years ago,” said Dr. Kang Sun, CEO of Amprius Technologies. “What makes this SiCore cell different and noteworthy is that it brings that level of extreme performance into a cell chemistry and format that are ready to scale with the existing lithium-ion battery manufacturing processes and equipment in the industry. It’s production-ready, commercially available, and already being qualified by customers today.”

The cell is engineered for durability across a wide temperature range and challenging environmental conditions. These features make it particularly attractive for aviation and defense customers seeking to optimize system-level performance without adding weight or complexity.

Mass Production, Certification, and Availability

To meet anticipated demand, Amprius has partnered with a global contract manufacturing network that provides gigawatt-hour-scale production capacity. The company expects to receive UN38.3 certification—required for air transport of lithium-ion batteries—within the current quarter. Volume shipments are expected to follow shortly thereafter.

The SiCore platform was first introduced in January 2024 to support both high-energy and high-power applications in a single format. With the new 450 Wh/kg variant now moving into production, Amprius is expanding its reach into electric aviation, defense, and next-generation mobility markets.
