Z-SCAN’s passive drone detection technology earns top honors in Oregon’s Proven in Pendleton event
Zing Takes Top Spot in Counter-UAS Challenge
Zing Drone Solutions has won the $100,000 grand prize at the Proven in Pendleton Counter UAS Challenge, hosted by the Oregon UAS Accelerator. The event, held in Pendleton, focused on identifying technologies that can protect secure facilities from rogue drones.
Zing’s flagship product, Z-SCAN, stood out among 30 competing systems. The competition included live field tests and investor pitches. A panel of national security and defense experts—including Tom Perkowski, Keith Brendley, and Paul Allen—selected the winner based on system performance and potential impact.
“This award is a major validation of our technology and vision,” said Ian Annase, Founder and CEO of Zing Drone Solutions.
Z-SCAN Closes a Critical Security Gap
Z-SCAN is a passive radio frequency (RF)-based detection system. It uses directional antennas and machine learning to detect and track drones and their operators in real time. Unlike radar or cameras, Z-SCAN works in poor weather conditions and does not rely on jamming or active signals.
“Drones are entering secure perimeters unnoticed, and bad actors are exploiting the vulnerability,” said Annase. “Security teams have strong defenses for ground threats like fences and cameras, but almost nothing protecting their airspace. Z-SCAN closes that gap.”
Correctional facilities are a key focus for Zing. The U.S. has over 1,500 such facilities, representing a $72 million annual revenue opportunity for the company. Zing also plans to target airports, stadiums, and other critical infrastructure.
Next Steps: Local Rollout, National Ambitions
Zing is beginning its commercial rollout in the Pacific Northwest. The company is working with local partners to build a strong base before expanding to the rest of the country.
“We are proud to be starting our commercial rollout in the Pacific Northwest, building a strong foundation through local partnerships before expanding nationwide,” Annase added.
