Why Hailey Bieber’s Rhode, Merit and More Are Launching Mirror Compacts

Though small in size they may be, mirror compacts are having a big moment.

The accessories — which have risen as gifting and “What’s in My Bag” TikTok video staples — are seeing new popularity as brands like Hailey Bieber’s Rhode, Merit and more launch their own offerings in the category.

In fact, combined Google Search and TikTok views data from Spate indicates interest in compact mirrors has grown more than 70 percent versus last year, receiving roughly 333,000 weekly TikTok views and 33,000 monthly Google searches.

While the trend is dominated on Google by the OG — Chanel’s $45 Miroir Double Facettes — on TikTok, the top branded hashtags alongside the trend are #Rhode and #Refy.

And no wonder: Hailey Bieber introduced her sleek metal Rhode Mirror on Jan. 30 for $24 alongside her buzzy Peptide Lip Shape lip liners, also $24 each. The liners offer a creamy finish intended for hydrating wear and thus, depending on desired intensity, reapplication throughout the day (enter the mirror).

Merit, too, launched a second limited-edition mirror compact earlier this month in collaboration with sustainable jewelry brand Completedworks. Available for free with Merit orders over $125 or for $38 on the Completedworks website, the launch follows a previous earrings collaboration between the two brands in December.

“Doing your routine on-the-go has always been part of our brand language,” said Merit’s chief marketing officer Aila Morin, harkening to the “five-minute morning routine” ethos the brand launched with in 2020. “Intentional, high-quality design that’s also functional is part of our brand DNA.”

Indeed, Merit is a routine player in the beauty merch game — from its signature makeup bag, which even underwent a makeover in 2023 courtesy of Proenza Schouler, to a limited-edition gold lighter case and other offerings that balance function and Merit’s signature design.

While Refy’s $15 stainless steel compact mirror launched a year ago, momentum for it has remained steady on TikTok since, while Diptyque’s Ovale Pocket Mirror — adorned with seashell fragments — also saw a holiday-timed surge.

Suffice it to say, what’s old — mirror compacts are nothing new after all — is being refreshed as brands bring a wave of new takes to the category that, on some level, offer a similar status-symbol appeal.
