Denting your car sucks. It happens to everyone at some point or another, and it’s often more of an annoyance than a real pain — there are plenty of hacks for popping out your own dents. Yet, when a Cybertruck owner showed up to the service center with a dented door, Tesla wanted to charge $3,000 for the fix. The owner managed it for just $25.
Tesla’s fix for the truck was an in-depth one: Remove and replace the door skin, then blend it with the surrounding panels. It’s not really clear how much blending would really be necessary, given that Cybertrucks are famously devoid of paint or in fact any kind of protective coating at all, but Tesla still wanted to charge for the service. Instead, Detroit Tesla decided to just fix up the existing door skin.
Detroit Tesla instead tried what looks to be a bog standard suction cup lifter, which initially had trouble sticking to the Cybertruck — likely due to the rain. Another attempt, indoors on a heated panel, worked flawlessly. Never underestimate how much heat can help you out.
The video claims this was a $25 fix, which lines up with Harbor Freight pricing: The company will sell you a $6.29 suction cup lifter and $19.99 heat gun, meaning you could get your own six-figure Cybertruck fixed for just $26.28 before tax. Sure beats Tesla’s pricing, and there’s no blending required.
