Ever since it was first unveiled, Elon Musk has proudly shouted about the strength of the Cybertruck, despite several owners proving firsthand that it isn’t quite what he claimed. Now, the Tesla boss has jumped on the back of a horrific Cybertruck crash in Mexico claiming that it proves the truck is “tougher than a bag of nails.”
A Tesla Cybertruck crashed in Guadalajara, Mexico, on November 2, reports Autoevolution. The electric pickup hit a statue and flung one woman from the truck, leaving her in hospital in a critical condition. Three other occupants of the electric truck walked away from the incident with minor injuries.
The electric pickup looks almost unrecognizable following the crash, with the entire front end of the EV smashed in to reveal all kinds of wiring and parts hanging out. Photos shared online following the crash also show extensive damage to the rear of the truck, which ended up resting on its roof, as well as damage to the sides, as Carscoops reports:
This Tesla was destroyed in Guadalajara, Mexico, over the weekend after reportedly crashing into a statue. No exact cause for the crash has been confirmed, although local media suggests that speeding was probably a factor. The extent of the damage speaks to this.
Photos shared to social media show the Cybertruck sitting on its roof in the middle of the road with extensive damage to the front and rear fascias, as well as both sides. It’s been so badly damaged that it’s almost unrecognizable and shockingly, three of the wheels and hubs have been torn from the truck, giving us some idea of the forces that must have been involved.
Images of the crash have caught the attention of Musk, the perpetually online boss of Tesla. In a post shortly after the crash occurred, the Tesla boss re-shared images of the destruction on Twitter X adding that the “Cybertruck is tougher than a bag of nails.”
The toughness of the truck has been questioned by some safety experts, however, as the design goes against most principles of safe car design. Usually, cars are designed to crumple and absorb the force of impacts . The Cybertruck’s designers focused on strength to save its occupants, which some experts have said mean its unsafe for both occupants and pedestrians.
What’s more, the controversial truck hasn’t yet been independently crash-tested in the U.S. That’s because organizations like the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety have limited resources that determine what cars they can and cannot crash test.
Additionally, the truck won’t undergo Europe’s strict NCAP tests anytime soon as the car is currently basically illegal over there.
