Sony Discontinues Airpeak – DRONELIFE

Sony Discontinues Airpeak – DRONELIFESony Group Corporation recently announced it will discontinue the Airpeak S1 drone and related accessories by March 31, 2025, due to “changes in the business environment.” The Airpeak line aimed to combine Sony’s camera expertise with high-performance drone technology but faced stiff competition from established brands.

Discontinuation Timeline and Support

Sony’s exit covers the Airpeak S1 drone, gimbals, battery chargers, and other accessories, with sales ending by March 2025. Battery packs and propellers will remain available until March 2026, while software maintenance and repair support will continue through March 2030. Application-based services, such as Airpeak Base and Airpeak Flight, are scheduled to end in 2030.

Launched in 2021, the Airpeak S1 was marketed as the “world’s smallest drone able to be equipped with a full-frame mirrorless interchangeable-lens α camera.” While its integration with Sony’s α series cameras impressed some users, high costs and tough competition limited its market traction.

Sony’s Drone Ambitions and Market Challenges

Sony’s Airpeak venture represented a bid to expand into the commercial drone sector, leveraging its camera technology to appeal to professional photographers and videographers. The Airpeak S1 included features like wind resistance up to 20 m/s and advanced positioning sensors to stabilize flights in challenging environments. However, entering the drone market required different expertise, and Sony faced difficulties competing with more established brands like DJI, which offered broader drone ecosystems, better functionality and a lower price point.

This outcome recalls similar challenges faced by other camera companies, such as GoPro’s brief stint in the drone space. Developing drones requires unique skills that differ from camera manufacturing, and Sony’s experience highlights the complexities newcomers face.

Support Transition for Airpeak S1 Owners

Sony has committed to supporting Airpeak S1 users with repairs and software maintenance through March 2030. Customers seeking assistance can contact Sony’s “Commercial Product Consultation Desk” during business hours.
