Amazon Drone Delivery Phoenix – DRONELIFE

New Prime Air location in West Valley offers rapid drone deliveries for select items

Amazon’s Prime Air drone delivery service has now launched in the Phoenix Metro Area, with operations based near Tolleson, Arizona. This expansion, first announced last April, is part of Amazon’s broader effort to provide faster deliveries using drone technology. The Phoenix program marks a new direction after the company recently ended its delivery initiative in Lockeford, California.

Prime Air Service Expands Reach in Arizona

In the West Valley area, Amazon customers located near the Tolleson Same-Day Delivery site are now eligible to receive orders by drone for select items weighing five pounds or less, with deliveries completed in under an hour. The Tolleson site, a hybrid facility that functions as both a fulfillment center and delivery station, enables Amazon to process, sort, and deliver items more efficiently.

“Amazon’s commitment to innovation exemplifies the entrepreneurial spirit that drives our city forward,” noted Tolleson Mayor Juan F. Rodriguez, adding that the service is anticipated to bring economic benefits to the local area.

Enhanced Safety and Technology with the MK30 Drone

The Prime Air service in Phoenix operates with Amazon’s new MK30 drone, which was developed to address the specific needs of suburban and urban delivery. Built over two years, the MK30 includes safety-critical features aimed at allowing safe operation in higher-density areas. The drone is quieter than previous models, travels twice as far, and can fly in light rain.

Amazon’s recent approval from the FAA allows the MK30 drones to operate Beyond Visual Line of Sight (BVLOS), an advancement made possible by the drones’ onboard detect-and-avoid system. This FAA approval followed a rigorous safety assessment and is intended to support Amazon’s expansion of drone delivery in select areas.

To ensure reliability, Amazon conducted extensive testing of the MK30 at its indoor and outdoor facilities. These tests provided data to support regulatory requirements and demonstrated the system’s performance to regulators in the U.S. and internationally.

Expanded Access to Everyday Essentials

Through this new service, Amazon offers a wider range of items available for drone delivery, including over 50,000 products from household items to tech supplies. The expanded selection aligns with Amazon’s goal to provide access to essentials in a shorter delivery time frame for customers in eligible areas, with a small service fee applied to drone deliveries.

Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego highlighted the potential environmental impact of drone delivery, stating, “The shift toward zero-emission package delivery will help us reduce local pollution and further cement our city as a hotbed for the innovative technology of tomorrow.”

Since launching its first drone delivery service in 2022, Amazon has expanded to areas like College Station, Texas, where it also began delivering prescription medications. The company plans to continue building on customer feedback to refine and expand Prime Air operations, with updates on the program’s progress to be shared in the coming months.
