FIX2024 Media Pick Awards – DRONELIFE

A Diverse Lineup of Innovators

DRONELIFE’s list included companies from all areas of the industry: drones, precision agriculture, manufacturing, AAM, and vertiport infrastructure.  Choosing the top 3 from this elite group was a major challenge.  Among the contenders:

  • TOFF MOBILITY is making waves as the sole Asian distributor of an all-electric RAM (Regional Air Mobility) product. This two-seater aircraft has a 70-mile (120 km) range and costs 40% less to operate than traditional internal combustion engine vehicles. Currently in the process of receiving aircraft certification in Korea, TOFF MOBILITY is poised to revolutionize regional air travel with eco-friendly technology.

  • KAI (Korea Aerospace Industries) is in the early stages of Advanced Air Vehicle (AAV) development, with commercialization expected by 2031. Their AAVs, which have a 100-150 km range, are developed with support from government contracts. Over time, KAI expects to shift from military to predominantly commercial applications, supported by their combined thrust engineering and manufacturing expertise.
  • MUGYEOL E.N.G focuses on hydroforming precision engineering, producing significantly lighter products compared to traditional cast iron parts used in vehicles and appliances. This innovation provides a major advantage for low SWAP (size, weight, and power) applications like aircraft. Despite being only 3 years old, MUGYEOL E.N.G is already competing on an international level.
  • Sung il Electrical Co., Ltd. manufactures precision parts for automatic transmissions, robotics, and the EV charging ecosystem – like the chargers that will be utilized for the burgeoning AAM industry. With a history of supplying the military for tank production, this company has gained global recognition, exporting to European and APAC countries. Their ability to provide military-grade precision has positioned them well for future growth in both military and commercial markets as a reliable provider of critical components.
  • dSPACE Korea, a subsidiary of Germany-based dSPACE, specializes in real-time simulation and cloud-based processing for autonomous vehicle testing. dSPACE Korea started with testing traditional vehicles for Hyundai, then expanded into sensor technology and simulation for autonomous systems. Their solutions are vital to advancing autonomous vehicle technology.
  • SMARTGIO develops AI-based software that addresses the detection of tree diseases. Their solution combines flight planning with an AI-based comparison tool, enabling drones to autonomously collect and analyze data in an overlapping grid. This technology helps identify small variations in trees’ health, offering significant value to customers. While competition is expected internationally, SMARTGIO’s solution remains a competitive offering in the precision agriculture space.

DRONELIFE’s Top 3 Picks from FIX2024

rgblab

rgblab stands out for its product, Arion, a platform-agnostic drone “brain” that utilizes NVIDIA chips for powerful edge computing, essential for AI-driven applications. Arion is customizable for a wide range of commercial applications, including autonomous targeting for defense, inspection, and delivery services. While the company also manufactures drones, their business model allows for OEM of the system, a key differentiator in a market often dominated by vertically integrated drone manufacturers. rgblab’s focus on flexibility and customization places it at the forefront of global drone technology.  Companies can come to RGB with an idea – and get a customized aircraft with the obstacle avoidance, sophisticated target tracking, and more already built in.

MORAI

MORAI provides simulators for advanced air mobility, using a digital twin to replicate any environment with precision. Their customer base includes research institutions, manufacturers, and autonomous aircraft developers. With clients in Germany and the US, MORAI expects to double its customer base annually. Their advanced simulation technology is essential for the continued growth and development of autonomous air mobility solutions.

Hyundai Elevator Co. Ltd.

Hyundai Elevator Co. Ltd. is leveraging its expertise in elevator technology to develop infrastructure for urban air mobility (UAM). They are working on takeoff, landing, charging, and maintenance platforms that can be built on top of existing buildings, solving space constraints in congested urban environments. Hyundai’s initiative is backed by their manufacturing expertise and government support, though global building codes may present a challenge in scaling the solution.
