We all love the Honda Civic, with its performance and fun all wrapped up in a practical package. But what if you want more performance, more fun, and don’t care for the practicality, should you just buy a different car? No! You should move your Civic’s engine to its rear hatch, like this brave EG seller did.

This Civic began life as a regular old EG hatch, until its current owner decided that one of the most beloved Civic generations simply wasn’t interesting enough on its own. Rather than sell it off for an MR-2, however, the seller simply made their own mid-engined Civic.

Rear Engine RWD 1992 Honda Civic cold start

The engine that sits in back is classic EG — a B18 LS block with a B16A2 VTEC head — and powers the rear wheels through a mostly normal five-speed transaxle. The listing says the shift linkage has been modified, which one would expect, but doesn’t go into any other changes to the drivetrain. It should still be Honda reliable then, right?

You might expect a build this wild to be some sort of fully stripped-out race car, but this Civic is still fairly normal ahead of its custom rear firewall. The front seats have been swapped for those from an Integra, but that’s about the only change noticeable in the cabin. Even the 1992-vintage steering wheel is still there.

This rear-engined, rear-drive Civic must be an absolute blast to hoon around. If anyone wants to lend me ten grand with which to confirm this, I’ll happily throw a bid in — at time of writing, it’d just edge out the car’s $9,999 high bid. C’mon, one of you must have some cash to throw around and a desire to read that review, right?
