J. Cole has shared a new song, âPort Antonio,â addressing the dormant feud between Kendrick Lamar and Drake. Check it out below.
The song is Coleâs first major contribution to the crowded field of diss tracks and spin-offs since his verse on Drakeâs âFirst Person Shooterâ declared Cole, Drake, and Lamar âthe big threeâ of mainstream rap, and his â7 Minute Drillâ tentatively upped the stakes with quibbles about Lamarâs recent music. Lamar, of course, responded on âLike ThatâââMotherfuck the big three.⦠itâs just big meââprompting Drake to reply with âPush Ups,â Cole to apologize for â7 Minute Drill,â and⦠well, you know the rest.
Now, Cole appears to be mediating between the two rappers. âThey say Iâm pickinâ sides, donât you lie on me,â he raps on âPort Antonio.â âDrake, youâll always be my n***a/I ainât ashamed to say you did a lot for me, my n***a/Fuck all the narratives, tappinâ back into your magic pen is whatâs imperative.â
Over a flip of Cleo Solâs âKnow That You Are Loved,â Cole also alludes to rappers using âalgorithm bot n****sâ to juice streams and sway public opinion, as well as lamenting the state of rap feuds and diss tracks more broadlyââon social media, competing for your favorable memes to be considered best.â
âPort Antonioâ ultimately plays as a justification for staying out of the feud: âI pulled the plug because I seen where that was âbout to go/They wanted blood, they wanted clicks to make they pockets grow/They see this fire in my pen and think Iâm dodginâ smoke/I wouldnât have lost a battle, dog, I woulda lost a bro.â
