Learn Remote Sensing and Data-Driven Farming Techniques to Optimize Crop Health, Irrigation, and Yield with UAV Technology from the University of Twente

by DRONELIFE Staff Writer Ian J. McNab

Florian Ellsäßer, an assistant professor in the Department of Natural Resources

ITC – Faculty of Geoinformation Science and Earth Observation, at the University of Twente in the Netherlands, recently released a new, free online course focusing on the use of remote sensing UAVs in precision agriculture, covering all the basics to start integrating UAVs and the valuable data they can create into farm operations and decision making.

“Developed by experts in UAV remote sensing, this course covers everything you need to know to conduct your own UAV missions and analyze data to support agricultural research and farm management decisions”, said Ellsäßer.

Course content

  • Introduction to UAVs and precision agriculture
  • Creating maps and 3d-point-clouds from images
  • The power of visual/RGB images
  • Multispectral imagery and agricultural indices
  • Working with thermal data and agricultural decision-making

Specific skills include “estimating bare soil in fields, crafting vegetation masks, and estimating crop biomass and yield”, with a focus on “optimizing plant health, ensuring precise fertilizer distribution, and detecting crop water use and water stress for more efficient irrigation.”

According to the course website, the class is for, “Students, professionals (farmers, agriculturalists), UAV pilots and enthusiasts, spatial data analysts, anyone interested in UAVs and precision agriculture, agriculturalists and farmers seeking to implement data driven agriculture, students who will work with UAVs and data analysis for their Bachelor, Master or PhD thesis, researchers and scientists who are looking to explore the use of UAV remote sensing in agricultural environments, data analysts who want to better understand UAV data, (and) everyone who is interested in UAVs but just didn’t find a good practical course to learn UAV application along real live problems.” The only prerequisite knowledge needed is an interest in drones and their applications in the precision agriculture space.

More information on the course, and a link to sign-up (valid until Nov. 4, 2024) is available here
