41: “Addicted” [ft. Fivio Foreign] Track Review

I swear it’s false spring about once a week in New York. Until it’s for real, I’ll keep listening to “Addicted,” a delirious highlight off 41’s kinda cool, kinda uneven new album AREA 41 that gives us an idea of what the city might sound like soon. Fivio Foreign kicks it off—macking on someone, drunk tweeting, calling up Lil Mabu?—before the trio’s Kyle Richh and TaTa exchange stories of sweaty, tipsy sexcapades. Radio-rap giants of the late ’90s and early 2000s like Mase and Fabolous perfected cool nonchalance, and on this album, Funk Flex’s new favorite trio raps with shoulders slouched just a little further: calm, freaky-as-hell club drill. The guitar riff in “Addicted” is silky like that shirt you still need to dry clean, blooming out of soft 808s and exploding into hot Miami bass at the end. It’s the most outside-ready song out right now.
