With the latest winners crowned for the New York City Marathon Sunday morning, the 2025 series of World Marathon Majors has concluded.
Benson Kipruto and Hellen Obiri won the men’s and women’s races, respectively, the former being the seventh major winner this year to wear Adidas. When it comes to shoes, Adidas was absolutely dominant in 2025. The next closest competitor was On, which took two of the 12 winning spots this year, Obiri being the second.
After Adidas and On, no brand was worn by more than one winner in the six majors. Nike, Asics and Under Armour had one winner a piece, the former in Chicago and the latter two in Boston.
Six of Adidas’ seven winners ran in the Adizero Adios Pro Evo 2 ($500), a freakishly light shoe at just 138 grams for a men’s size 9.5. It comes in at the same weight as its predecessor but with 3mm more of Lightstrike Pro Evo foam for 10 percent increase in stack height and 5 percent better energy return. Rather than a carbon fiber plate, the shoe uses the same material for Energy Rods that follow the lines of the metatarsals.
In the time between its introduction in September 2023 and the announcement of its follow-up in April 2024, the Pro Evo 1 was worn by all six major winners. Tigist Assefa also opted for the Pro Evo 1 in her win this year at the London Marathon.

On Cloudboom Strike LS
The On shoe worn by Kebede and Obiri is the Cloudboom Strike LS ($330), which uses “spray-on” LightSpray technology to create its formfitting upper. At 170 grams for a men’s size 8.5, the shoe features neither laces nor a sockliner. Beneath the foot sits a dual-density foam and a spoon-shaped carbon fiber plate.
Obiri also wore a prototype of the shoe at the 2024 Boston Marathon before its official debut at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
