2025 Ryder Cup: Europe defeats United States at Bethpage Black

The Ryder Cup will be decorated in European blue for the next two years.

Despite an incredible charge from the United States side during Sunday singles, the Europeans prevailed. Following Saturday’s matches the Europeans held a 11.5-4.5 lead over the Americans, a matter that evened out to 12-5 before Sunday began as Viktor Hovland withdrew. Harris English was left out of the United States lineup per the tournament’s “envelop rule.”

Shane Lowry won it all for his fellow Europeans.

The Americans rallied on Sunday, though. Cameron Young, Justin Thomas, Scottie Scheffler, Xander Schauffele, and J.J. Spaun all won their respective matches to narrow the gap. Bryson DeChambeau tied Matt Fitzpatrick while Patrick Cantlay posted the only losing American match at the time of the cup’s official retainment.

It was Shane Lowry who secured it as noted. Fitzpatrick’s half-point, Ludvig Aberg’s full one that he won from Cantlay, and finally Lowry’s half from his match with Russell Henley did the trick.

Lowry made birdie on the 18th hole at Bethpage Black and Henley had a chance to do so right before him. Russell left his putt short and unfortunately also gave Lowry the read. It felt Cinderella-like all Sunday long for the United States, but it was too little too late.
