2025 Open Championship: Scottie Scheffler wins and closes on career grand slam

We knew it was inevitable and Friday effectively secured that. Saturday slammed the door shut.

Scottie Scheffler won the Open Championship on Sunday at Royal Portrush, became the Champion Golfer of the Year, is the reigning PGA Championship winner, happens to be the top-ranked golfer in the world… and he is now a U.S. Open away from a career grand slam.

At one point on Sunday matters became quite laughable. Scheffler, once again at certain point, had a seven-shot lead and this whole thing was hilarious in how much he has dominated golf since winning The Masters for the first time in 2022.

For a moment there was question about Scheffler’s ability with the putter and he put that to rest (and then some) in securing the Claret Jug. There is not a single facet of his game that is not world-class at the moment and the comparisons to Tiger Woods write themselves.

The FedExCup Playoffs and Ryder Cup remain on this season, but it is hard to not say that we just lived another year that was The Year of Scottie Scheffler. What is truly remarkable about this is that in this specific year Rory McIlroy – the player of his generation – won the career grand slam himself by finally securing a Masters Green Jacket. Golf truly delivered from a major championship standpoint in 2025.

There is no limit to what we can dream or pontificate for Scheffler’s future within this game. He is well on record that he doesn’t define his future to be anywhere other than with his faith and family, a perspective on life that is certainly giving him the necessary disposition to operate the way that he does tournament in and tournament out.

Congratulations to Scottie Scheffler, Champion Golfer of the Year.
